"The conditions I treat — diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and many others — touch almost every part of a person's daily life, which means the relationship between doctor and patient really matters. My aim in every consultation is to make it a genuine conversation: understanding what's most important to you, explaining the reasoning behind our decisions, and building a plan that fits your life — not just the textbook."
Dr Shamil Cooray is a consultant endocrinologist with specialist expertise in diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, osteoporosis, and thyroid disease. He brings a strong academic background — including a PhD focused on gestational diabetes and clinical prediction modelling — to a practice grounded in evidence-based, patient-centred care.
Dr Cooray holds clinical appointments at Monash Health and Alfred Health, and is a Research Fellow at the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI). He is a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and holds additional qualification in obstetrics and gynaecology (DRANZCOG), reflecting his particular interest in diabetes and endocrine conditions in pregnancy.
Dr Shamil Cooray completed his undergraduate medical training at Monash University, graduating with Honours in Medicine and a Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours. He undertook his physician training in general medicine and endocrinology at Monash Health, Alfred Health, and University Hospital Geelong, before completing his PhD at Monash University — investigating gestational diabetes, risk stratification, and clinical prediction models to improve pregnancy outcomes.
His clinical work spans the breadth of adult endocrinology, with particular expertise in all forms of diabetes — including type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes — osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, thyroid disorders, and weight management. He has a strong interest in the use of technology in diabetes care, including continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy.
As a Research Fellow at the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation, Dr Cooray continues to contribute to clinical research in gestational diabetes and related metabolic conditions. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and been invited to present at national and international conferences. He has also contributed to the education of postgraduate medical trainees through teaching roles at Monash University.
Dr Cooray sees patients at Suite 49, Cabrini Malvern, and also provides inpatient endocrinology consultation at Cabrini Malvern Hospital. He is committed to a collaborative model of care that supports close communication with referring general practitioners and allied health providers.
Outside of medicine, Shamil is a father to four children and finds equal joy in the quiet rituals of life and the adventurous ones. He is on a probably-endless quest for the perfect coffee brew, and spends as much time outdoors as possible — whether that's cycling with the family, camping under canvas, keeping up a jogging habit, or playing social squash and pickleball.
Dr Cooray's clinical interests span the breadth of adult endocrinology, with particular expertise developed through his training at Monash Health and Alfred Health, his doctoral research in gestational diabetes, and his ongoing work as a Research Fellow at MCHRI.
